Unfortunately, the present buildings are recent addi tions that date from as recent ly as 1936. T u Dam Pagoda was founded around 1695 by Minh Hoang Tu Dung, a Chines e monk. It was given its present name by Emperor Tliieu Tri in 1 R41. It was here tl i;it the Unif ied Vietnamese Buddhist Association was established at a meeting held in 195 1. During the early 1960s, Tu Dam was a major centre of the Buddhist anti-Diem and anti-war movement and in 1968 it became the scene of heavy f ighting, scars of which remain. Today, Tu Dam Pagoda, home to a handful of monks, is the seat of the provincial Buddhist Association. The peculiar bronze Thich Ca Buddha in the sanctuary was cast in Hue in 1966.
